The Look
Anatolian Shepherd Dogs have large, muscular frames covered in short coats that can come in almost any color. They have large, somewhat broad heads with square muzzles, hanging V-shaped ears and almond-shaped eyes. Their thick tails sometimes curl slightly at the end. Overall, this dog has a confident but calm look.

What They Are Like to Live With
Anatolian Shepherd Dogs are loving and loyal household companions. Protective and alert, they make excellent watchdogs. They also form strong bonds with children, being both gentle and playful. Because they are so big and strong, careful training is needed from an early age. They are very intelligent, however, and learn commands and rules quickly.
Things You Should Know
Anatolian Shepherd Dogs can live as long as 14 years. Common health issues include eye problems, hip dysplasia and hypothyroidism. They need little grooming attention except during their shedding seasons. An occasional brushing will suffice during non-shedding months.
Their History
The Anatolian Shepherd Dog originated more than 5,000 years ago in Turkey. Used by nomadic shepherds for herding, watching and guarding flocks, they had the size, ruggedness and adaptability for Turkey’s harsh terrain. They first became popular in the U.S. in the 1950s.
